Our God is sovereign. Isaiah 46:8-10 says “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other;I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.” God does all that pleases Him and absolutely nothing, not one atom, one event, or one thought of man, is outside of His control and dominion. So much so that Proverbs 16:33 says “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” Jesus talked about how not even a sparrow falls to the ground without God’s doing and the Apostle Paul tells us that God “works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will.” (Eph. 1:11)
Before God created anything, His purposes were already established. He was sovereign in creation, is currently sovereign in sustaining the universe, and is sovereign over every event the future holds, no matter how seemingly inconsequential or meaningless. This also means that God is sovereign over evil. At times it may seem that while God may have created everything, somehow it has gotten out of His control. The Bible teaches us otherwise. Scripture reveals to us a grand narrative of God using all things for His purposes, including evil. In the story of Joseph in Genesis 37, we see Joseph’s brothers commit great evil against him and God. Later in the story we see how God, while not morally responsible for this evil and not perpetrating the evil acts themselves, uses a person’s wickedness to accomplish His own perfect purposes. Joseph says in Genesis 50:20, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
We also see God’s divine sovereignty on glorious display at the cross. In his sermon on the day of Pentecost, Peter says “This man (Jesus) was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,put him to death by nailing him to the cross.” (Acts 2:23) No action, no matter how evil, is outside of the sphere of God’s sovereignty.
This is unbelievably great news for the Christian. Romans 8:31 says “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Not only is our God in absolute control of everything that happens in the universe, He also works all of those things for the good of His children. (Rom. 8:28) That means that no event in our lives is outside the hands of the master craftsman as He fashions us into the image of His glorious Son. It is sure, God’s purposes for our lives will be accomplished. He will use the good, the evil, and the seemingly indifferent things in our lives to bring about His ultimate purpose of His glory and our good.
~ Prayer ~
God, there is nothing outside of Your control and dominion. Facing this fact can be difficult sometimes because there are things in my life that I cannot begin to imagine being used for Your glory and my good. Help me to trust in your goodness and my sure footing in your Son. Give me comfort in the things of the past, strength for the present, and an unshakeable hope for the future because You promise to use all things for my good and Your glory and you are the only One able to do it. Amen.
